More Purr, Less Panic

Did you know August 22 is “Take Your Cat to the Vet Day” So why am I telling you about this in June? Many cat owners panic at the thought of wrestling with their cat to get them in the carrier. Then the howling and possible soiling of the carrier during the car ride. If you work on a few tips now, you will be surprised at how easy it is to get your cat to the veterinarian.

First let’s talk about the carrier. How many of you only bring out the carrier when it is time to put the cat in it? If so, then that can only mean one thing to Kitty. Store your carrier in a place that the cat always has access to. Take the top off of it and make it into a bed or feed them in it. Make the carrier a place where good things happen.

Second, make the carrier feel safe with bunting! Bunting is the act of a cat rubbing his head on objects. Cats have many glands on their heads that secrete pheromones. The pheromones mark the object as safe territory. Feliway is a synthetic pheromone that is both calming and imparts a safe feeling. You can spray the carrier or bedding frequently to encourage your cat to visit. Feliway also comes in a towelette that can be used to wipe down the inside of the carrier. In the United States, cats are more popular than dogs. Yet they receive less than half the veterinary care provided to their canine counterparts. Cats have the remarkable ability to hide signs of illness. All cats, even indoor only cats, need to be examined once a year. So, take your cat to the vet and make it easy on both of you.
